Meenakshi Temple - A famous Hindu Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati
Meenakshi temple is a famous Hindu temple located on the banks of river Vaigai in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the largest and most visited centers of worship in the country.
Meenakshi temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati, and is also known as Meenakshi-Sundareshwara Temple. The temple was originally built by Kilasekara Pandya, and was rebuilt once again by Trimalai Nayak in the 17th century.
Meenakshi temple has four different entrances and is spread in an area of 6 hectares. There are 12 Gopurams(towers) rising to a height of 50 mts from solid granite bases and have images of colorful statues of deities, mythical animals and various other mythological characters. The temple attracts approximately 15,000 visitors in a day and was also listed among the top 30 nominees for 'The Seven Wonders of the World’.

Best Time to visit Meenakshi Temple
The temple is usually open from 5 AM to 12:30 PM and 4 PM to 9:30 PM on all days. The best season to visit Meenakshi temple is from October to March.

The nearest domestic airport is the Madurai airport which is 10 kms away from the main city and the nearest international airport is the Bangalore International Airport at a distance of 46 kms from the temple. The nearest railway station is the Madurai railway station, which is 3 kms away from the temple.
